Heartland Spine & Specialty Hospital awarded UnitedHealth PremiumŪ Surgical Spine Specialty Center designation
January 8, 2008
OVERLAND PARK, KS Mary Nan Holley, chief executive officer of Heartland Spine & Specialty Hospital (HSSH), announced today that it has been designated a UnitedHealth Premium Surgical Spine Specialty Center.
UnitedHealthcare developed the UnitedHealth Premium Specialty Center designation program to give its members information about, and access to, surgical spine hospitals meeting rigorous quality criteria said Holley. This designation is based on detailed information about specialized training, practice capabilities and outcomes that we submit to UnitedHealthcare and is designed to help members make informed decisions should they need surgical spine care.
To receive this designation, HSSH met extensive quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice. The criteria incorporate measurements of breadth and depth of care, staff experience, emergency care, quality and outcomes reporting.
UnitedHealth premium specialty centers are identified to UnitedHealthcare network physicians, employers and members through a variety of media, including myuhc.comŪ. This program helps consumers recognize that HSSH is a community leader in surgical spine care.
HSSH, a physician-owned and managed hospital, located in Overland Park, Kansas, has a medical staff of approximately 85 and 140 total professional staff.

OVERLAND PARK, KS Although they may seem worlds apart, Heartland Spine & Specialty Hospital, a prestigious physician-owned Center of Excellence in Overland Park, Kansas and Samuel U. Rodgers Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Kansas City, Missouri, have found common ground through CEO s Mary Nan Holley and Hilda Fuentes.
From their initial introduction last January, the two Chief Executives have focused more on the similarities of their positions rather than the differences. Their interactions culminated with a generous donation of office furnishings and surgical attire from Heartland to the Rodgers Clinic last week.
From the moment I met Hilda and toured the Rodgers Clinic facility, I was inspired by the remarkable commitment to their mission and knew that we could find ways to support their efforts , said Holley. The opportunity came when Heartland moved business office personnel into new office space last month and purchased new surgical scrubs for physicians and staff. According to Holley, We knew that we could sell the items to another facility, but when I approached our physician-owners with the opportunity to make this contribution they jumped at the chance to support the work of the Rodgers Clinic .
Our physicians and staff are absolutely delighted with the positive impact this donation will have on our daily operations said Fuentes. As an organization serving the needs of an uninsured and indigent population, we are used to allocating extremely scarce financial resources to meet the needs of our patients. We greatly appreciate the generosity of Heartland, and their commitment to supporting the patients we serve.
Both executives look forward to a long-term relationship between the organizations. It is a great pleasure to know that we are making a positive impact on the healthcare community of Kansas City, improving conditions for patients from such a wide variety of circumstances. I am confident we will continue to identify opportunities to support the Rodgers Clinic in the future. said Ganesh Gupta, MD, a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and one of thirty physicians who own Heartland Spine & Specialty Hospital.
